Enrichment Programs
This after school enrichment program offers in-depth, active exploration
of high-interest topics. Each ScienceWorks program runs for six weeks; maximum of 10 children per
class. Contact the Education Director for more
information. Current programs include:
Animal Ambassadors: Meet some amazing
animals and learn how they survive in their own habitats. Join us for scales,
tails, and nail, as we explore reptiles relatives, amphibian abilities, might
mammals, and more!
Around the World in 6 Weeks: Animals
and plants live in many different places. Begin with our own local habitats and
then "journey" around the world to discover other exciting and diverse
ecosystems. Have fun with activities from a rainforest, desert, tundra, and more
- a different adventure every week! Find out what makes each place so special
and why it might be interesting to live there!
Astro Adventures: Look, up, up, up and
discover the wonders of astronomy! In this fun-filled space odyssey, we will
investigate the science and stories surrounding our universe's heavenly bodies.
Discover how the sun, moon, stars, and planets have influenced life on Earth,
and how they have let to determining our calendar.
Copy Cats (Biomimicry): Nature did it
first! Super Glue, Velcro, zippers, airplane wings, camouflage - lots of human
products and technology were inspired by the natural world. Explore various
man-made items, discover their natural source, then invest something useful that
mimics a plant or animal. Grade 3 and up.
Crafty Nature: Using natural materials
create works of art like sun catchers and mobiles that show off Mother Nature's
beauty! Have fun making items to play with or wear. Possible creations may
include: twig puppets, pinecone animals, pet rocks, leaf print t-shirts or rock
games. No artistic ability needed!
Days of the Dinosaurs: Travel through
time to learn about fantastic creatures that lived long ago. Learn about the
clues scientists use to study prehistoric life and be amazed by recent findings
about bigger-than-ever dinosaurs!
Discovering the Eastern Woodland:
Woodlands are always growing and always changing. Discover how people (from
early Native Americans to modern man) have depended on the forest for food,
fuel, and fun! Explore the woodlands and search for the wonders hidden there.
Gather some natural materials and create works of art and activities that remind
us how important the forest really is.
Flowers, Snails, and Caterpillar Tales:
Animals, plants, the maintains, and the sky - every part of nature has a special
story to tell! Each week enjoy a different tale along with exciting activities
and explorations. Grade K-2.
Great Forces of Nature: Earthquakes
rock the ground beneath us. Volcanoes erupt, spewing molten rock from deep
inside the earth. The soaking rain and stiff winds of hurricanes ravage the
coast. Churning tornadoes touch the earth, leaving destruction behind. Powerful
lightning strikes start blazing fires. Come investigate these great forces of
nature, and find out what moves and shakes our not-so-quite planet! Grade 3
and up.
Imagination Station: Imagine yourself
creating fantasy creatures, space crafts or machines from materials found around
the house? Use recycling concepts to turn trash into treasure. Grade 3 and
up.
Kitchen Chemistry: Have fun
discovering what chemistry is all about? Find out what you can do with baking
soda, salt, detergent and other familiar things you have in your cupboard.
Magic for Muggles: Explore the messy
and mysterious world of magic. Discover how you can gross out your friends with
stretchy, slippery and sticky stuff. Meet some live animals common to both the
Wizarding and Muggle communities. Find out why owls make good messengers, how
snakes communicate, and meet a scaly cousin of Norbert the dragon. Grade 3 and
up.
Never Get Lost Again: Try your hand at
several methods of finding your way through the winderness using simple clues in
nature as well as compasses, maps, and even GPS units. Use ancient techniques as
well as modern technology to become a navigator for the 21st century! We'll
practice these skills indoors and then go outside and use them in challenges and
quests. Grade 3 and up.
Rock, Rumble, and Roll: Come along for
some rock talk and learn the fantastic stories that rocks can tell! Have a blast
as we make crystals, explode volcanoes, and experiment with magnetic forces.
We'll investigate all sorts or rocks from the ordinary to the unusual. Grade
3 and up.
The Science of Music: Come with us on
a musical journey as we explore different types of sounds. Discover how we hear
music and why all instruments don't sound alike - we'll even make a few of our
own to take home. No musical talent required!
Young Scientist: What is a scientist?
Each week become a different type of scientist, such as a zoologist, botanist,
chemist, or meteorologist. We'll test the scientific method and have fun doing
it!
